Founded in 1995, BTU Engineering has been providing energy solutions for over 17 years. The staff includes licensed professional engineers, all with advanced engineering degrees. The skilled staff has the experience and knowledge necessary to develop tailored solutions meeting our client's unique needs. Since we are not affiliated with any equipment suppliers, our analyses are unbiased and will help you sort out your options. We will provide independent review of proposals and calculations associated with energy and/or cost saving projects.


Michael P. Twedt, PE, CEM - President

Mr. Twedt has been performing energy audits and analyzing energy systems since 1992. In this time he has conducted over 300 energy assessments on public and private facilities in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota. Mr. Twedt is a registered Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of South Dakota and an Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) Certified Energy Manager (CEM). Mr. Twedt possesses a MS in Mechanical Engineering from South Dakota State University. He completed his graduate work in the field of energy conservation. In addition to his work through BTU Engineering, Mr. Twedt teaches part time in the Mechanical Engineering Department at South Dakota State University where he serves as a liaison between academics and professional engineering through classes such as Renewable Energy Systems, HVAC Design, Mechanical Design, Industrial Engineering and Design, Mechanical Systems in Buildings, Heat Transfer and Thermodynamics.


Derek W. Hengeveld, PhD, PE - Vice-President

Dr. Hengeveld has been analyzing energy systems since 1996. In this time he has conducted well over 200 energy assessments on public, private, and government facilities in the Midwest. In addition, Dr. Hengeveld has successfully led numerous building energy modeling projects to support LEED certification projects, commercial building tax credit applications and the USDA Rural Energy for America Program (REAP). Dr. Hengeveld is a registered Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of South Dakota and possesses a MS in Mechanical Engineering from South Dakota State University and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering form Purdue University. In addition to consulting, he has taught a wide-range of courses in the Mechanical Engineering Department at South Dakota State University. Dr. Hengeveld is also helping develop next-generation satellite thermal control subsystems for the Air Force.


John D. VerSteeg, EIT - Energy Analyst

Mr. VerSteeg has been analyzing energy systems since 2011, and is currently completing his MS in Mechanical Engineering with an emphasis on thermo-fluid energy systems at South Dakota State University, where he completed his bachelor’s degree in 2011. In addition to analyzing energy systems for BTU Engineering, Mr. VerSteeg is researching the use of biomass energy utilization in the Midwest for the Energy Analysis Lab at South Dakota State University, and writing his master's thesis on pulsating heat pipes. Mr. VerSteeg also teaches the application of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics concepts through the thermal-fluids laboratory course in the Mechanical Engineering Department.


Christina M. Gerometta, EIT - Energy Analyst

Ms. Gerometta has been analyzing energy systems since early 2012. She is currently completing her MS in Mechanical Engineering, with an emphasis on thermo-fluid energy systems, at South Dakota State University, where she completed her bachelor’s degree in 2011. In addition to analyzing energy systems for BTU Engineering, Ms. Gerometta is researching the potential of corn stover to be used as a bio-char for the Energy Analysis Lab at South Dakota State University. Ms. Gerometta is also a teaching assistant for the Measurements and Instrumentation course in the Mechanical Engineering Department at SDSU.


Evan R. Almberg, Intern

Mr. Almberg is currently completing his BS in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Sustainable Energy Systems at South Dakota State University. In addition to aiding in energy analysis for BTU Engineering, Mr. Almberg has also had internship experiences in a variety of manufacturing facilities. As a senior, Mr. Almberg has begun focusing his technical electives in thermal-fluids with courses including Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics, Design of Thermal Systems, and sustainability courses such as Renewable Energy Systems.


Zachary S. Woodward, Intern

Mr. Woodward is currently completing his BS in Mechanical Engineering at South Dakota State University. Mr. Woodward is studying a broad range of subjects and is considering pursuing a MS in Design Engineering.
